Meet Melanie Liebsack

Social Security Disability Attorney

undefinedMelanie began her law career almost 20 years ago and brings a unique perspective to the practice area of Social Security Disability law because she has worked as an attorney advisor/decision writer for the Social Security Administration and as a private practice attorney advocating for the disabled.

Early Legal Career

She developed her understanding of Social Security while working for two Federal Judges writing decisional drafts, which included federally appealed Social Security claims. After completing her Judicial Clerkships, she entered into private practice with Hellige, Frey, and Roe, a law firm in Sioux City, Iowa and began advocating for individuals applying for Social Security Disability benefits. In 2007, she opened her own solo practice, in Iowa, focusing on advocating for the injured and disabled. In 2016, she and her husband decided to return to Nebraska to be closer to family and the Huskers.

After arriving in Omaha, she worked from home and focused on getting her kids settled in a new school and community. She contracted her legal services with different area law firms, including Smith & McElwain, Cuddigan & Cuddigan, and Cavanaugh Law. She reviewed files and social security denials; drafted pre-hearing briefs; and assisted drafting requests to review denials by administrative law judges to the Appeals Council level. She worked as a contract attorney until her kids were settled. In 2017, she accepted an employment opportunity with the Social Security Office of Hearing Operations, as an attorney advisor and decision writer for Social Security Administrative Law Judges.

In December 2018, the law firm of Watson & Carroll offered her an opportunity to once again engage in client advocacy and representation. She is excited to be part of the firm’s hardworking and dedicated Social Security team.

Melanie has successfully represented clients from South Dakota, Iowa, and Nebraska. She is committed to and believes in providing quality and personalized local representation.

Beyond the Law Office

When not working for her clients, she enjoys gardening, cheering on the Huskers, trying new recipes, attending her kid’s activities, and spending time with family and friends.
